The economic and social costs of mental health problems are high.
From work we did in 2010, we know that the total cost of mental health problems in England in 2009/10 was £105.2 billion.
The figure includes the costs of health and social care for people with mental health problems, lost output in the economy, for example from sickness absence and unemployment, and the human costs of reduced quality of life.
This new calculation is an update of the £77.4 billion cost of mental ill health calculated by the Centre in 2003. The figure takes into account inflation since 2003 and the rising cost of health and social care.
