Equally Well UK – Cancer and Severe Mental Illness

Improving outcomes for people living with severe mental illness and cancer

Date: Thursday 27th March 2025
Time: 12pm – 1pm
Delivered: Virtually (Joining details will be sent upon sign up)

Equally Well UK would like to invite you to an online event with South East London Cancer Alliance (SELCA), Health Innovation Network (HIN) and Dr Laura Charlesworth on improving outcomes and reducing the risk of cancer for people living with a severe mental illness.

People who have a severe mental illness experience significant inequalities related to cancer. These include:

  • Premature death: adults with SMI are about two times more likely to die from cancer before the age of 75 than people without SMI
  • Lowered screening uptake: people with SMI are between 18-31% less likely to take part in cancer screening programmes than people without SMI, reducing the chances of spotting cancers early when they are often more treatable

SELCA and HIN have produceda series of digital resourceswhich contain advice on reducing the risks of having cancer, navigating the cancer system and making sure people get the best possible treatment and support for their mental and physical health. These resources were co-designed with people with lived experience of cancer and serious mental illness, as well as both mental health and oncology specialist clinicians.

In this webinar, SELCA and HIN will be sharing details of the digital resources and how our members can use these, and we will hear from Dr Laura Charlesworth on her research about how severe mental illness impacts cancer outcomes in individuals and the needs of those with lived experience. We will also be joined by someone with lived experience who will share their story and the challenges they faced attending their screening.

Please sign up to attend below.

Please note this webinar is open to members only, but please do share this invite with your colleagues. If you have any questions, please get in touch with shizana.arshad@centreformentalhealth.org.uk.

Please note that the webinar will be recorded and shared on our website and on social media. You can find out more about how we protect the data you use to sign up by reading ourprivacy policy.
