Centre for Mental Health announces new Chair and President

28 January 2025

Centre for Mental Health is delighted to announce Michael Morley as its new Chair of Trustees, as Professor Dame Sue Bailey becomes its new President.

Professor Bailey has served as Chair of Centre for Mental Health since 2018, steering the charity in its bold new focus on social justice in mental health. She will continue to champion the Centre’s work as she takes up her new role as President.

Michael Morley has served as Centre for Mental Health’s Deputy Chair since 2019 and was previously on the Board of the Forces in Mind Trust. With an extensive career in the financial services industry (including as former CEO of Coutts & Co and of Deutsche Bank UK), Michael brings a wealth of strategic and financial expertise to guide the Centre in the next phase of its work.

The charity, which marks its 40th birthday this year, has become a leader within the mental health sector by leveraging its groundbreaking research to equip policy-makers and tackle inequity in the mental health system.

Professor Dame Sue Bailey, President at Centre for Mental Health, said: “The Centre’s commitment to tackling mental health injustice through research is more crucial than ever. I am thrilled to be taking on the new role of President at the Centre as we drive forward policy change to pursue good mental health for all.”

Michael Morley, Chair of Trustees at Centre for Mental Health, said: “I am honoured to have been elected as Chair of Centre for Mental Health and humbled to be following the outstanding stewardship of Dame Sue Bailey. The Centre indeed stands at the very centre of our national approach to mental health policy, and I am proud now to take on the role of chairing the Board of Trustees and representing the talented team at the Centre in the wider world.”

Andy Bell, Chief Executive at Centre for Mental Health, said: “Everyone at Centre for Mental Health is delighted that Sue Bailey will become our first President, and that Michael Morley is our new Chair of Trustees. Sue and Michael have both demonstrated a deep and lasting commitment to the Centre’s cause and purpose. Together we will continue to pursue mental health equality and social justice.”
