Centre for Mental Health has announced today that, after nearly a decade at the Centre, CEO Sean Duggan will be leaving for a major new role as Chief Executive of the Mental Health Network of the NHS Confederation.
Sean Duggan has been chief executive at the Centre since 2009 and before that was director of the charity’s criminal justice programme. He will take up his new job at the end of the year.
Lady Elizabeth Vallance, chairman of Centre for Mental Health, said:
Sean Duggan has led the Centre through the biggest transition in its 30-year history. He has not only led the Centre to a sustainable, independent future but ensured that it has continued to produce high quality work and to influence national policy throughout this time of transition.
The trustees of the Centre would like to thank Sean for his exceptional leadership and his dedication to the cause of better mental health and a fairer chance in life for people with mental health problems. We have begun the process of recruiting his successor and will appoint a new chief executive to begin work with us as soon as possible.

It has been a pleasure and a privilege to work at Centre for Mental Health for the last nine years, seven of these as CEO. The Centre’s talented and committed staff team, board members and supporters have enabled us to continue to produce life-changing research, to influence policy and to inform practice while seeking new sources of funding. The Centre’s mission remains as vital as it has ever been and I know that it will continue to change people’s lives and life chances for many years to come.
