More people with drug or alcohol addiction can be helped into employment with the right support, according to our research.
Employment support and addiction: what works finds that Individual Placement and Support (IPS) can help people with problematic substance use to enhance their employment prospects and their chances of recovery.
It finds that an IPS service run by Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL) successfully placed 84 people with drug or alcohol addiction into paid work in one year. Of its 212 clients in 2012, 181 were unemployed and completely unoccupied when they were referred. With the team’s support, 84 got paid work, 71 got education or training and 31 took up volunteer opportunities. Just 50 continued to be unoccupied.
